Medication Aide Major

This major is a program that prepares individuals to administer prescribed medications; observe and report patient reactions and side effects; and perform related emergency and recording duties under the supervision of nurses and/or physicians.

Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, common medications, and their effects, taking vital signs, oxygen administration, medication administration and application, record-keeping, and patient observation. emergency recognition and referral, geriatric care, and legal and ethical responsibilities.

As a Medication Aide, and under the direction of a nurse in hospital or care facility, it is your job to administer medications to people who need help making sure they take the medications they need, such as individuals who are elderly or disabled.

 

The job opportunity outlook for medication aides is very good as this career subsector is expected to see a nine percent (9%) decline 2019-2029.

A high school diploma or equivalent is generally the minimum educational requirement to enter this career area.  Medication aide certification courses may be required in some states. There are also postsecondary nondegree award programs at community colleges and vocational schools.
